Our History
With the continued dangerous trend of road traffic accidents in Nigeria, which placed it as one of the most road traffic accident (RTA)-prone countries worldwide (the most in Africa) in 2013, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) saw the need to establish the present Nigerian Institution of Highway Engineers (NIHE) in 2013 to address the carnage on the highways. In July 2013, the Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) approved the establishment of the Nigerian Institution of Highway Engineers (NIHE) as the 19th Division of NSE.
On Saturday, November 13, 2013, the NSE President and Chairman-in-Council, Engr. N. B. Shehu, FNSE, inaugurated the Division at Rock View Hotel, Abuja, in the presence of a huge number of highway engineers.
The new division commenced its journey to adulthood with substantial support and logistics provided by the Managing Director of FERMA, Engr. Gabriel Amuchi. Protem officers were elected to drive the institution: Engr, Isa Usman Emoabino, FNSE, as the National Chairman, Engr. Anaduaka Gabriel Obiekwe, FNSE, as the Vice Chairman, Engr. Emeka Agbasi, FNSE, as the General Secretary, among others.
