Bola Mudasiru Champions AI and Global Best Practices for Nigeria’s Road Sector at NIHTE–IRF Workshop

The Nigerian Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE), in partnership with the International Road Federation (IRF) Global, has urged greater adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform road management and infrastructure development in Nigeria.

At the opening of the international workshop on “AI Applications for Road Management” held on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the NSE Main Auditorium in Abuja, Acting National Chairman Engr. Dr. Bola J. Mudasiru, FNSE, FNIHTE, emphasized the need to expose Nigerian engineers to advanced technologies and global best practices.

He noted that Nigeria’s vast road network — spanning over 200,000 kilometres — faces challenges including maintenance backlogs, congestion, safety risks, flooding, and erosion. Traditional methods, he stressed, are no longer sufficient. AI offers practical solutions such as predictive maintenance, traffic-flow optimization, real-time asset management, accident prediction, automated incident response, and climate-resilient design.

Dr. Mudasiru also underscored the importance of ethical deployment, ensuring transparency, inclusivity, data protection, and alignment with Nigeria’s climate and development goals. He highlighted that NIHTE’s collaboration with IRF Global will strengthen engineers’ capacity through knowledge transfer, case studies, and sustainable frameworks.

Acknowledging the support of NSE, Federal Ministry of Works, FERMA, RAAMP, NBRRI, COREN, and other partners, he concluded that the workshop is not just about technology, but about creating a sustainable legacy for future generations through ethical innovation and collaboration.
