The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) saw the need to establish the present Nigerian Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE) in 2013 to address the carnage on the highways. In July 2013, the Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) approved the establishment of the NIHTE

The Society offer courses and workshops regularly for professional improvement and continuing education of members. These courses/workshops are coordinated by the Professionals.

A Member of any grade is expected to fill out an application form for a particular membership grade level, however, there is no automatic upgrade to the next membership grade level.
