From August 10–13, 2026, the Nigerian Institution of Highway Engineers (NIHTE) proudly partnered with the International Road Federation (IRF) to deliver a groundbreaking certified training program on AI Applications for Road Management.

Held at the NSE Auditorium in Abuja, the event convened highway engineers, road safety agencies, consultants, and policymakers to explore how artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, and advanced analytics are revolutionizing infrastructure planning, maintenance, and safety.

Key sessions covered:

  • Drone-based pavement condition assessments and automated distress detection.
  • Predictive deterioration modeling and AI-powered maintenance prioritization.
  • Digital twins for road networks, enabling real-time monitoring and resilience planning.
  • AI-enabled traffic and safety management, including crash hotspot prediction and congestion control.

The program emphasized Nigeria’s unique challenges — asset backlogs, climate resilience, and funding constraints — while showcasing global best practices. Participants left with actionable strategies and clear roadmaps for implementation.

NIHTE remains committed to advancing knowledge, building capacity, and ensuring that ethical AI adoption supports inclusive, sustainable infrastructure development. Together, with IRF and our partners, we are laying the foundation for smarter, safer, and more resilient roads across Africa.
